Red flags while comparing agencies

While comparing surrogacy agencies, some looked almost perfect on paper. But after a few calls, we began noticing small things that made us uncomfortable. These were the biggest red flags:

• Pressure to sign quickly or “reserve a spot” with a deposit.

• Vague answers about what happens if a transfer fails or plans change.

• Packages advertised as “all-inclusive” without a clear list of exclusions.

• Guarantees that sounded too good to be true.

• Avoiding questions about independent legal advice.

• Being reluctant to explain how gestational carriers are screened and supported.

• Only offering references from “successful” parents chosen by the agency.

• Important promises made verbally but not included in the contract.

We learned to slow down, ask the same question twice, and request everything important in writing.

For those who compared several agencies: what was the biggest red flag you noticed — and what made you walk away?
